Junior Boys Basketball Team Plays Well at Riverside Tournament

The Junior Boys had a successful tournament this past weekend at Riverside. After a first round victory with a score of 62-29 the Raiders found themselves as the only Tier Two team  on the winner's side of the tournament. This put us in the difficult position of playing teams with much larger school populations, but the team competed for the most part even though we were unable to secure another victory. In our final game we rallied but came up short 54-45 against Kennedy. Every player dressed was able to see action in each game and we hope the experience received on the weekend will help us when we return to regular season action Tuesday at home against first-place Kingsville at 4:00. The coaches and the team would like to give special thanks to Ms. Groves for not only giving up a good portion of her weekend to be our teacher-sponsor but for also purchasing snacks for the team. This is what true RAIDER spirit is about

Jamal H. going up for a layup with Josh R. looking on.

Business students win another competition!

Students from the BMX3E marketing class competed in the YouthX Entrepreneurship Competition last week at the Odette School of business.  After running their own micro-business for 8 weeks, the top 11 groups from around Essex County were invited to present their enterprises to a panel of judges.

Round 1 presentations were in three separate rooms, and the top 2 groups from each moved on to the final round.  Both Assumption groups won their preliminary round and advanced to the finals.

After the final presentation, 3 Axis Printing from Assumption was named the top group overall and won a $700 investment to help them grow their 3D printing business.  The other Assumption group ended up in 4th place.  It was an ourstanding event overall, and several of the judges (including local entrepreneurs, lawyers, professors and bankers) shared their business cards with the Assumption students hoping to foster long term connections with them in the business community.

Congratulations to Enzo Campa, Dan Burns and Jacob Schwab on their victory!

Please take a moment to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VngUN6dwc9I     - it was compiled during the first 4 hours of the event and shows what our business competitions look like

Sincerely,
Mr. Bracken

ACS Business Competition - First Place

Students from Mr. Bracken's Business Leadership Course competed in the Odette Highschool Leadership Initiative competition on Friday night at the University of Windsor.  They began the journey 4 weeks ago by presenting their case study analysis to a panel of university business students and professors.  After being selected as the top group from our school, they proceeded to compete against the top groups from many schools around Essex County and Detroit.

Using excellent presentation style, the Raider team had a great balance of research and analysis which propelled them to victory!

Congratulations to Danielle DiPasquale, Dico Angelo, Summer Bohnsack and Vu Ngo on their very impressive performance!

Holocaust Guest Speaker

Last Thursday on December 4th, one of our students Alex K.L. invited the Grade 10 IB and Grade 11 World religions classes to come and dialogue with Magda and her husband about their experiences of the Holocaust. Magda shared her story about being in Hungary during the Nazi occupation, and how she was victim to anti-semitism,discrimination and bullying. Her story brought tears to many students, and all promised they would never forget about the atrocities suffered. She asked students never to support those who are holocaust deniers, but to always stand up for truth and justice.
Thank you once again Mrs. Sauro

Letter to Parents

The following letter will be going home today with students:

Dear Parents/Guardians

I am writing to you concerning the “hold and secure” that took place on May 6, 2014. A “hold and secure” is called when there is a threat, not normally related to the school, outside of the building. The school is under normal operation but external doors are secured limiting movement in and out of the building.

The event took place as a result of an isolated incident originating off of school grounds and was promptly ended. A “Hold and Secure” was called to control movement in and out of the building. All students and the Assumption school community were safe in the building. The diligent supervision and decisive action of the staff, and the cooperation of students, ensured that our building remained secure.  Time was required for the Windsor Police Service to conduct their investigation resulting in the “hold and secure” remaining in effect for the duration of period 3, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Classes were under normal operation during this time period.

It has come to my attention that some students may have tweeted and texted some misinformation surrounding yesterday’s events. This is unfortunate as some of this misinformation could lead to unnecessary anxiety and fear.  We will continue to educate toward the responsible use of these tools.

At Assumption we continue to be committed to providing your son or daughter with the best possible educational experience and school safety is an important part of that.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any concerns.

Sincerely,

Joseph Ibrahim
Principal

ACS Reach Team Champions!

On April 1st, the Assumption Reach Team participated in the Regional Championship Competition at St. Joseph High School.  We played four games with other top schools from the Windsor and Essex county.  Assumption Raiders won FIRST place, qualifying for the Provincial Finals in Toronto.
Nick Tobin lead the team with a fantastic performance, being able to correctly spell the most challenging words, name the moons of Mars, recall  random history facts, and win scrambles for control.
Antony Piruzza’s outstanding knowledge of Outkast and quick response time helped our team win several forty point questions.
Josh Jaekel's excellent memory in the area of science and popular culture was invaluable.
Finally, Erin Gaudette and Elisabetta Kerr were of  great assistance with their vast knowledge of literature, media, art  and culture.
Michele D’Agnillo, although unable to attend the final championship, has proven himself an extremely valuable player, often being a top scorer at regular season games. His contribution to our team is greatly appreciated.
Mrs Sawicki would like to thank all Reach Team members for the successful season, and for representing our school with great pride, dignity and class.
