Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

Pope Francis has declared that the Universal Catholic Church
will observe a Jubilee Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015, to
November 20, 2016. The pope made the declaration in front of
the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. The Holy Door is usually
bricked up, but is opened during a Jubilee year.

Jubilee years occur about every 25 years—the last occurred in 2000. These holy years
are filled with special celebrations and pilgrimages, strong calls for conversion and
repentance, and the opportunity to experience God's grace through the sacraments,
especially confession.

Jesus' message of mercy shines all through the Gospels, challenging society and the law
to see the divine justice present in mercy. His greatest parables tell of an ungrateful
steward forgiven of his debts, who tragically fails to show the same forgiveness to
his debtors (Matthew 18:21–35); of a wasteful son who carelessly spends his father's
inheritance, only to be embraced by his father when he penitently returns home (Luke
15:11–32). In his ministry, the Lord reached out to the hated tax collector (Luke 19:1–10)
and rescued the accused adulteress (John 8:2–11), reconciling them with society and
with God—and with themselves. This is our calling.

Debate - Champions

The Assumption Debate Team marched into Massey High School this Saturday for the Massey Invitational.  Teams from Windsor, Essex County, Chatham and Sarnia competed through 6 rounds of debates.  When the dust settled, Assumption's Evan Tanovich and Uyger Tepe emerged as the champions.

This is a huge accomplishment, as these 2 grade 10 students were facing senior students most of the day.

This duo is now 10-0 on the season!

Model UN trip

The ACS Model United Nations team returned with their teacher-moderator, Mr. Paul Sobol, from Lansing Michigan over the weekend after another successful conference. A special congratulations goes out to Virginia Facecchia for representing Jordan in the Arab League. Virginia received top honours in her council for her role in addressing human trafficing, drug smuggling and the challenges presented by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. She, along with the rest of the team, competed against hundreds of seasoned delegates from high schools across Michigan.

All team members shared their diverse knowledge and skills over two long days of sessions and left conference participants with a genuine impression of Canadian compassion and diplomacy.

A special thank you to Mackenzie Habash for her assistance in preparing the team and for her role in representing the United Kingdom in the Security Council.

The team looks forward to their next conference challenge in the pursuit of global peace.

ACS Cross Country

Yesterday the Raiders competed in the SWOSSA cross-country championships at Malden Park.

In the very cold winds the raider runners turned in some great performances and we've got some great results!

The midget boys placed 8th in all of southwestern Ontario and they were led by Cole Jessop whose continued improvement – 40 seconds faster than last week – proves that practicing hard makes all the difference.  Benedyct Skyrzpek, Paul Mikhail, Dylan Cai, Daniel Xie and Johnny White also ran well.

The Junior Boys got better and better and they capped there season with an 8th place finish at SWOSSA  They were led by Uygur Tepe who ran almost a minute and a half faster from last week and was only a few places from the "SWOSSA REVERSE".  Alex "Quattro" Borden, Eray Yilmaz, Evan Tanovich and Andy Little all ran well, improving their times from last week.

Nathan Droulliard a grade 11 running against grade 11s and 12s, ended his season with his best performance by far, nearly cracking the top 30 in all of southwestern Ontario and improving his time by 40 seconds in one week. Great job Nathan!

Our lone senior girl runner, Daniela Papac, another grade 11 running against both grade 11s and 12s, improved her time by over one minute from last week and placed 11th in all of southwestern Ontario. Great race Daniela!

The top finish of the day belonged to the midget girls' team. They finished 5th in all of southwestern Ontario nearly catching the fourth placed team. They were led by Alexa Mongeon, Claire Sion, Sarah Martin, Lia Oschianney and Michaela Buxton. All of the midget girls ran well and improved their performances from WECSSA.  They proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in the future.

The highlight of the day came in the midget girls' race. Alex Mongeon definitely turned in the run of the day, the run of the season. Alexa achieved the ever elusive SWOSSA REVERSE. That is, she actually finished better at SWOSSA than at WECSSA. This is an extremely difficult feat but Alexa was on a mission. She placed 6th at WECSSA but then placed 4th in all of southwestern Ontario, just 15 seconds behind the gold medalist. This earned Alexa a trip to Collingwood next weekend to compete in the OFSSAA championships. Congratulations Alexa! You earned it!!

Mr. Conlon and Ms. Lukas would once again like to congratulate all runners on a great team performance.

ACS Cross Country Highlights!

Last Wednesday, the Raiders competed in Sarnia at the Cantera Park Invitational Cross-country meet... and we've got highlights.

The day started off well with the midget girls capturing a bronze medal team finish led by top ten finishes by Alexa Mongeon and Claire Sion. Other teammates who turned in fine performances were Lia Oschanney, Sarah O'Brien, Majestic Ruttle, Krystal Warner and Michaela Buxton.
The Junior girls were led by Nyadeni Jordan-Simon while the senior girls were led by Daniela Papac's bronze medal performance.

The midget boys were led to a 7th place finish by Jessop Cole, followed closely by Benydyck Skyrpyck then Daniel Xie, Paul Mikhail, Dylan Cai and Johnny White.

The Junior Boys, equaled the midget girls bronze medal performance led by Uygur Tepe who ran "out of his shoes" to finish 11th overall. He was supported by excellent performances by teammates Alex Borden, Eray Yimaz, Nick Harris, Evan Tanovich and Andy Little.

The Senior boys were led by Nathan Droulliard who ran an aggressive and gutsy race over 7km to finish 11th overall in a very talented field.

The three stars of the meet were Daniela Papac who raced to a bronze medal finish in a field that included two grade 12 runners who are among the best in Ontario.

Alecsa Mongnon who keeps getting stronger and like Daniela won a Canterra Competition T-shirt for her 6th place finish.

And Claire Sion who powered her way to an eigth place finish... just missing a t-shirt that we all know she deserved.

The "Practice Pays Off Awards" go to Cole Jessop, Uygur Tepe and Nathan Drouillard whose races yesterday demonstrated how their commitment at practice paid off in great results as they turned in their best races of the season.

Finally, on behalf of coaches Mr. Conlon and Ms. Lukas, we would like to congratulate the entire team for the amazing overall team effort yesterday and superb team spirit!
